The $349 DVD-SK12D, Pioneers latest portable external DVD/CD writer, has a small form factor but stuffs in FireWire/USB support and DVD write speeds of up to 2.4x. This makes it an ideal choice for professionals who need DVD/CD backups on the go.
The DVD-SK12D, measuring 5.5 inches by 0.8 inches by 6.5 inches and weighing a little more than a pound, can easily be stored in a laptop bag. Pioneer provides a stand to hold the writer upright. The DVD-SK12D began shipping last month.
In addition to its excellent portability, the DVD-SK12D supports most popular DVD and CD recording formats. It can also write CD-R media at up to 16x and CD-RW at 10x.
The DVD-SK12D supports the latest interfaces, including standard IEEE 1394 FireWire and USB 2.0 ports. Laptop users can take advantage of higher DVD recording speeds because most of todays laptops are equipped with USB 2.0.
However, the DVD-SK12D is more expensive than competing internal DVD writers—many internal DVD 2x writers cost less than $200.
For users looking for a desktop DVD writer, Pioneer also offers the high-speed DVR-S606 at $299. The DVR-S606 is much bigger but has DVD write speeds of up to 4x.
