As testers continue to post their mostly positive and quite detailed impressions about Windows Vista Build 5536 (a k a the “pre-Release-Candidate 1 build that Microsoft began distributing last week), there have been other, later builds (like Vista 5538, which ExtremeTech reviewed recently, as well as 5552 that’s making its way around the Torrents). There also have been sightings of Vista 5700 builds. On the Vista Team Blog, Product Manager Nick White explains the Vista numbering differences this way: Builds 5400 through 5699 are all part of the Release Candidate 1 tree. Numbers beginning with 57XX are part of the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) tree. “So does this mean that MS is working on builds for RC1 and RTM in parallel? You bet!” White blogged.
