Axentras new OfficeSeries S-200 Multifunction Server Appliance is a good choice for small-business environments with its simple setup, nearly effortless management and comprehensive package of applications.
The $799 S-200, which shipped last month, is about the size of a standard desktop and is built on standard PC hardware. But under the hood, Axentras Linux-based OEone Server operating system provides an easy-to-use management framework and preinstalled applications such as e-mail, file sharing, database and Web portal.
It took me less than 10 minutes to connect the appliance to my test network. Configuration of the applications took longer but was still straightforward. All system management and application configuration tasks can be done using the Web browser.
The S-200 I tested sported an AMD Athlon XP 2200 processor, 512MB of memory, a 120GB hard drive and built-in Ethernet ports. The system comes with four USB 2.0 ports, to which IT managers can attach USB hard drives or backup devices.
Axentras competitively priced appliances are easy on small sites IT budgets. The line includes the $599 S-100, which offers an Athlon XP 1800 processor, 256MB of memory and an 80GB hard drive, and the $999 S-500, built on an Athlon XP 2700 processor with 512MB of memory and a 160GB hard drive.
