Supply chain management software maker Exel plc. announced today that it is acquiring United States Consolidation Limited for an undisclosed sum.
USCL, one of Asias largest consolidators, provides freight consolidation services to U.S. importers and retailers sourcing from Hong Kong and South China. The company also operates facilities in Carson, Calif.
Consolidation software enables shippers to optimize the way goods are arranged for transport, thus reducing the amount a space used and reducing transportation costs.
London-based Exel is bringing USCL into the fold to strengthen its presence in the retail sector, which will add more impetus to its ocean freight product, according to officials.
Specifically, Exel will look to USCLs consolidation and purchase order management technology to beef up its existing suite of offerings.
Formerly known as Ocean Group, Exel has expanded through acquisitions to become a global logistics company that employs more than 55,000 people in over 120 countries. It was in 2000, when Ocean Group purchased Exel, that the company took the latters name.
