Built around the 2.4.8 Linux kernel, Mandrake Linux 8.1 PowerPack fancies itself a full-featured workstation system. In tests, it turned in decent results, but its not clear whether that will be enough to overcome similar advances found in competing open-source offerings from companies such as Red Hat. Mandrake Linux 8.1 PowerPack was a snap to […]
Configuring security devices is one of the most basic and time-consuming aspects of setting up a protection perimeter around IT assets. Organizations that rely on NetScreen Technologies Inc.s hardware, including firewalls and IDSes, should check out versions 3.0 of Global Pro Express and Global Pro. In eWeek Labs tests, Global Pro Express reduced the time […]
Detecting network attacks is as much an art as a science, and thats not likely to change any time soon. There is no lack of systems for detecting security breaches—IT managers can avail themselves of software tools, services and appliances ranging from firewalls to IDSes (intrusion detection systems) to log analysis programs to managed service […]
Intrusion detection and security management is rightly seen as a cost center, but with the right blend of tools and imagination, the costs can be leveraged to reveal significant performance management gains. At eWeek Labs, weve seen that most of the products that provide security services—including detection and nearly every analysis tool—are based either on […]
Symantecs pcAnywhere Version 10.5 is now compatible with Windows XP and has added some valuable security refinements. Although Version 10.0 worked with XP, there were minor video compatibility problems that Symantec ironed out in Version 10.5, which will be released this week. Of course, the other “incompatibility” is that XP comes with its own remote […]
Symantec is passing off its recently released Norton Ghost 2002 disk-cloning tool as a backup tool for road warriors and small business. However, after working with the $69 product, I recommend sticking to any of several backup utilities and services that are often cheaper—about $20 for shareware tools—or more convenient to use. Even though I […]
Edge IP version 2.0 is going back in time and embracing WINS, thus broadening this DHCP/DNS appliances appeal in large organizations that use older NetBIOS Windows networks. In eWeek Labs tests, Threshold Networks Inc.s turnkey appliance turned in admirable results when it came to handing out IP addresses and keeping track of Domain Name System […]
Get out the treasure map. bring along a stethoscope. hunting down IIS systems, especially inadvertently installed rogues, will take a methodical, plodding approach. However, an accurate network diagram and diagnostic tools can take some of the pain out of plugging IIS security holes. Draw a map of the organizations network that shows where IIS systems […]
Faster web site response for dial-up users is the probable payoff for content providers that install Condenser 3.0 from FineGround Networks Inc. Condenser 3.0, which shipped last month, sits next to the origin Web server and tracks page requests, serving up only the changes between a reference “base” page and new content provided by the […]
Visualpulse 2.0a is a useful little tool for monitoring Web site responsiveness and availability, especially for IT managers who want a basic, no-frills utility that is simple to set up and manage. Made by Visualware Inc. and released last month for $200 on Windows systems, VisualPulse let me measure response time for eweek.com in real […]
