Dont expect the latest crop of wireless protocol analyzers to stand still if dual chip sets that allow wireless cards to support 802.11b and 802.11a achieve traction. It mostly comes down to writing a driver that can support features of both chips in a single card, but as our tests revealed, this task is more […]
WLANs are becoming a fact of life, or at least a creeping threat, for many enterprise networks. The most important question to ask of the newly minted pack of wireless protocol analyzers designed to address this threat is: What can these things see in the air that cant be seen on the wired connection? eWeek […]
Having trouble with DoS attacks? Want to figure out a way to see whos behind them or at least track down the source? There are a couple of interesting twists in Network Associates Technologies Inc.s Sniffer product line. First is the Sniffer Investigator, a protocol analyzer appliance designed for small to midsize enterprises. Investigator, which shipped in February, is a scaled-back version of Sniffer Pro. The second notable ware, released April 4, is Sniffer Enterprise Management Architecture, a […]
A denial-of-service attack can cripple a network, even if access isnt gained, and a single distributed-denial-of-service onslaught can disable a multitude of systems. Products including Top Layer Networks Inc.s Attack Mitigator Version 1.0 can help a lot, as can firewalls, operating system patches, additional servers and working with ISPs to choke off DoS traffic further […]
I got reacquainted with Novell AppNotes, from Novells research department, at BrainShare last month. Its a publication I hadnt seen in quite some time, and the revised edition is worth a look (online at developer.novell.com/research), even if youre not a Novell user. With articles on a range of technology topics, from LDAP to trouble-shooting Q&As, […]
To put Top Layer Networks Inc.s Attack Mitigator through its defensive paces, eWeek Labs used 60 clients, some set up as targets, most set up as attackers; a Dell Computer Corp. four-way PowerEdge 6300 500MHz system running Windows 2000 with Microsoft Corp.s Internet Information Services as the main target. On the software side, we used […]
Top Layer Filters Traffic Top Layer Networks Inc.s Attack Mitigator Version 1.0 provides powerful protection from DoS and distributed-denial-of-service attacks on Web servers and other network infrastructure devices and desktop systems. The Attack Mitigator is best suited for large organizations that need an extra layer of protection for their networks. It shouldnt be thought of […]
At Novells Brainshare Conference, I heard a couple of the companys developers touting LDAPzone.com, a handy Web site for keeping track of what is happening with LDAP, from a (theoretically) vendor-neutral viewpoint. The site has useful information about implementing directories on a variety of operating system platforms, lots of tips and tricks, white papers, and […]
Agilent Technologies FrameScope 350 is a good test tool for cable plant installers and network trouble-shooters who need to certify cable and get accurate after-installation results in a compact, easy-to-use form factor. The biggest problem we had with the product was a terminally misaligned touch-screen that prevented us from scrolling through long lists of results. […]
