Trio Take Different Tacks in Fighting Spam

Separating the wheat from the chaff in e-mail is tricky enough on a manual basis. Automating the process is complex and often has mixed results, but three approaches (see chart) examined by eWeek Labs can significantly reduce the expense and frustration of dealing with junk e-mail. All e-mail servers and clients allow for substantial rules-based […]

LinuxWorlds Sobering Message

This years LinuxWorld Conference and Expo marked the end of the age of innocence of the open-source community. Sure, men of all ages and varying-length ponytails crawled the show floor. But the show itself was dominated by the big names of enterprise computing. Making money and gaining market share were the ascendant themes; a pall […]

Websense Checks Mobile Code

One consequence of Microsoft Corp.s .Net platform is that mobile code (code thats downloaded from the Internet and executed on a local machine) will likely become much more prevalent. IT managers can factor this into their strategic security plans with Websense Inc.s screening database called Premium Group III, which blocks access to Web sites that […]

All-in-one products such as Lightspeed Systems Inc.s Total Traffic Control 3.0 have to clear a high hurdle of skepticism in eWeek Labs. However, Total Traffic Control managed to do just that in tests. This combination firewall, bandwidth limiter, traffic shaper, load balancer and content-filtering package worked effectively in a wide variety of traffic management tests […]

Marimba Tool Aids Migration

IT managers who plan to migrate desktop systems to Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional now have another handy option to help with the task. In eWeek Labs tests, Marimba Inc.s Marimba Migration Module made short work of upgrading systems with a minimum of deskside support visits. The new reports, scripts and process guides in […]

Dirig Software Inc.s newly re-branded and beefed-up Dirig 3.5 agent technology shows theres still room for improvement—not to mention cost savings—in the mature application and system tools market.
