While acknowledging that prevention is important, Mark Doll, director of The Americas for Ernst & Youngs Security Technology Solutions Practice, preached the gospel of detection at a recent breakfast seminar sponsored by his company and Symantec. I talked with Doll after the March 10 presentation, which focused on material from a book he co-authored with […]
Microsoft rolled out the first beta of its Automated Deployment Services for Windows Server 2003 and announced a Dynamic Systems Initiative at the second annual Management Summit in Las Vegas earlier this week. I was on hand, along with eWEEK Senior Editor Paula Musich, to see what Microsoft has in mind for its management products. […]
Everdream Corp.s updated managed desktop service has power-sharing capabilities that will likely shake up desktop support by allowing IT managers greater flexibility in how they apportion their support budget. Until now, desktop support was an all-or-nothing proposition: 100 percent outsourced or 100 percent in-house. Everdreams update to its ECC (Everdream Control Center), which became available […]

Its so easy to add a wireless access point. And at $60 to $100, an access point is even within my “purchase authority.” The stage is set for the increasing appearance of “rogue” access points. Discovery of a rogue access point usually leads to a swift, simple response: disconnection with lecture. The access point is […]
The IEEE 802.3AF Power-over-Ethernet task force, which met last month at Cisco Systems Inc.s headquarters in San Jose, Calif., is slated to finish its work in June, but vendors are preparing to release products based on the specification now. Based on eWEEK Labs work with wireless access points and VOIP (voice-over-IP) telephone handsets, we think […]
The original XML recommendation turned 5 years old Feb. 8 (go to www.eweek.com/links to see the original specification). I caught up with Dave Hollander, a member of the original group that hashed out the specification. The group also included Tim Bray, Jon Bosak and Michael Sperberg McQueen, among others. (See eWeek Labs interview with Jon […]
