[WP_IMAGE] In the hubbub of Interop news surrounding HP’s broadside shot at Cisco it was easy to overlook the management angle. I’ll be looking at just that area and in particular at HP’s Intelligent Management Center. HP’s Intelligent Management Center proposes to put the network management console on a single pane of glass, a claim […]
/imagesvr_ce/eweek/eweek_labs/2011/05/header_logo.jpg The Ethernet Alliance will be at Interop Las Vegas. Interop-Las Vegas starts in a couple of days. I had a chance to catch up with the Ethernet Alliance chairperson, John D’Ambrosia to hear about what the EA would be doing at the show. After the conversation, I know that Ethernet Alliance members will be […]
[WP_IMAGE] In the cloud era, it seems almost quaint to talk about physical servers. And to a certain extent, the commoditization–or at least the common sourcing–of the processor, memory, hard drive, network and power supply components diminishes the technical distinctions between server systems. However, everything cloud starts life in an ocean of very real hardware. […]
If it’s Wednesday than that means a new video episode of CIO Insight on the Pulse Network. CIO Insight is a sister publication of eWEEK and I’m always happy to be invited on the show to talk about enterprise technology. In today’s episode, I’m talking about troubleshooting wireless networks. Also on the show, Maggie Rulli […]
[WP_IMAGE] The Fluke Networks AirCheck wireless network analyzer is a tool that should be added to the “must have” list for front line network pros who must have immediate access to local radio conditions but don’t want to walk around holding an open laptop. The AirCheck device is a rugged, handheld tool with a clear, […]
The latest version of Fluke Networks’ AirCheck handheld WiFi analyzer is a premium tool for front-line techs who go on-site to solve wireless network problems. The 1.2 version can immediately identity clients, wireless devices and access points on a network. When combined with site profile information, it was a snap to identify unauthorized and new […]
[WP_IMAGE] Alongside dedicated, physical network gear that just keeps on working, virtualization technologies and the cloud are plowing up fields of alternatives to single-purpose, silicon based network devices. At least that’s my thought here at eWEEK Labs. Nothing stands still. Everything that seems certain and fixed comes under pressure from innovation and change brought about […]
[WP_IMAGE] I just finished testing the Dell PowerEdge R415 1U, AMD-based, general purposed server. You can read my full review here and the slideshow here. Today, I just want to mention the Ready Rails kit that came with this server. Four pieces, ten minutes and this server was securely mounted. There’s an optional cable management […]
[WP_IMAGE] It’s Springtime and that means new laptops. A fresh crop of performance beauties are in the lab and I’ve been having fun with the new hardware. I’m not having so much fun with the software that comes on these systems. Fortunately, nearly all enterprise users get a laptop that has been imaged with the […]
The Dell PowerEdge R415 rack-mount server is a general-purpose workhorse system that is a worthwhile choice for cost-conscious organizations. However, the PowerEdge R415 is more than a replacement for Dell’s SC1435, which is a 1U AMD-processor-based pizza box. In the PowerEdge R415, Dell is recognizing the rise of server virtualization in the data center by […]
