[WP_IMAGE] As part of my preparation for the Citrix Synergy conference in San Francisco, I brushed up on different virtual desktop technologies. Part of this exercise involved watching the short online videos that Citrix, Microsoft and VMware use as part of their product pitch to the outside world. After seeing these clips in a group, […]
[WP_IMAGE] The Open Virtualization Alliance (OVA) was announced on May 17 and much of the analysis since then has focused on the formation as an attack on VMware. I concur that the OVA is an attempt to coordinate support for KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), which is an integral part of Linux. But if this is […]
Gorilla Glass meets Penguins The 13.3-inch Corning Gorilla Glass display is a bright, edge-to-edge screen. 6-Row, Island-Style Keyboard This is the first ThinkPad with island-style keys. Arranged in six rows, the full-sized keyboard is a large trackpad and control keys running down the right side of the keyboard deck. The matte black finish is nice, […]
The X1 13.3-inch laptop is in many ways Lenovo’s response to the MacBook Air. However, the heavier, angular and much more capable X1 should be considered on its own merits for business users who want a durable, sleek and portable system. The Lenovo business-class system has a number of ThinkPad firsts including a bright, 13.3-inch […]
[WP_IMAGE]In competitive diving a small splash as the diver enters the water is the tell tale sign of a slight flaw in what might otherwise appear to be a well-executed maneuver. The 13.3-inch Lenovo X1 laptop created just such a small splash during my tests at eWEEK Labs. But first, let’s concentrate on the preponderance of the […]
I’m getting ready to go on the road for work and I find that I may have to bring a laptop. This is a big change for me. Over the last couple of years, I’ve been able to carry the only computer I really want to lug: my smartphone. [WP_IMAGE] Instead of a laptop, I’ve […]
[WP_IMAGE] I’m in the process of switching identities. Again. The first switch I made was from using my Ziff Davis email account to Gmail. But I chose poorly and created handles with either a “zdm” (Ziff Davis Media) or “zde” (Ziff Davis Enterprise). Thus, while I had created a work-only, private email address, it was […]
[WP_IMAGE] Ten months ago I opined about the impending changes on the way for data center networks. In a technical analysis written after briefings and demonstrations at Cisco’s Building 2 in San Jose, I wrote, “For one thing, Cisco has “skin in the game” in the form of its UCS offering. For another, the obvious […]
[WP_IMAGE] During the NetSuite conference, the company announced that it would partner with enterprise social platform provider Yammer to add Facebook-like, secure, internal microblogging to NetSuite’s CRM, financials and online commerce offerings. The move makes sense. Salesforce.com has Chatter (review, slideshow) and it’s clear that secure, private social media tools have a place inside organizations […]
Who knew Acer made servers? And knowing that Acer does make servers, should IT managers care? After testing the Acer AR380 F1 at eWEEK Labs, the answer to the second question is “yes.” The AR380 is a rack-mounted, 2U system that is roughly comparable to competitors’ offerings in terms of compute and physical configuration, but […]
