Safeguarding Branch Offices

Symantecs Firewall/VPN 200R appliance, although a latecomer, is an able contestant in the secure branch-office connectivity playing field. During tests of the device, which is priced at $1,199 and shipped earlier this month, I was pleased to see enterprise extras—including dual broadband ports, unlimited VPN client licensing and dial-up access to manage the device. However, […]

In Praise of Lean Desktop Management

This fall, a crop of feature-bloated desktop management tools will show up on IT managers doorsteps. Dont be afraid to use these tools. Just dont feel like you should use all their features. In fact, after talking with several IT managers about desktop, laptop and PDA management, which includes software distribution, software and hardware inventory, […]

Mata Bill Needs More Thought

In a move to protect privacy and First Amendment rights, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, based in San Francisco (www.eff.org), is urging Web denizens to contact their elected representatives and urge them to defeat the Mobilization Against Terrorism Act. According to early interpretations by the Department of Justice, MATA would allow authorities to install a wiretap […]

Managing Assets Anywhere

Management tools for laptops, PDAs and pagers cover all the bases, but IT administrators must resign themselves to using separate software distribution and hardware and software inventory tools to track desktop and mobile devices. Laying aside privacy and compatibility concerns, what if a paramedic arriving on the scene of an accident automatically had immediate access to the medical history of an unconscious victim? Hewlett-Packards Cool Town concept-turned-demo-center in Palo Alto, Calif., is an interesting look into the near future, which could very well include this scenario. Cool Town is […]

Fast Security to Go

IT managers can choose among a fast-growing crop of capable Gigabit-speed firewall/VPN appliances that push the price and manageability envelope. One thing that became clear during eWeek Labs tests of two products in this category is that, increasingly, “speeds and feeds,” or the sheer ability of a firewall/virtual private network device to handle traffic, will […]

Phoneboy Site Worth Checking

Phoneboy.com is a handy Web site for those who administer Check Points Check Point FireWall-1 firewalls. Visitors can submit questions and browse through an eclectic mix of FAQs and documents. Interestingly, the site is not run by Check Point, although phoneboy.com does work to reach the companys technical support team. I found all sorts of […]

Free Site Shows a World of Info

Internet traffic monitors arent new, but the relaunch of internettrafficreport.com, a free service provided by Opnix, provides a neat peek at worldwide Web performance. Although the free Web site is a hook for the companys Orbit 1000 performance-monitoring tool, which is still in beta, I found that the sites ping-based reports of router performance in […]
