Andrew cut his teeth as a systems administrator at the University of California, learning the ins and outs of server migration, Windows desktop management, Unix and Novell administration. After a tour of duty as a team leader for PC Magazine's Labs, Andrew turned to system integration - providing network, server, and desktop consulting services for small businesses throughout the Bay Area. With eWEEK Labs since 2003, Andrew concentrates on wireless networking technologies while moonlighting with Microsoft Windows, mobile devices and management, and unified communications. He produces product reviews, technology analysis and opinion pieces for eWEEK.com, eWEEK magazine, and the Labs' Release Notes blog. From somewhere outside myself, I watched in horror as my hand clicked “OK”—and deleted a rather large collection of disk images from my computer. After a futile attempt to recover the files, I figured it was finally time to implement my drunken New Years pledge to back up my personal files more regularly. I started […]
MIMO—multiple-input multiple-output—promises dramatically improved throughput and range for wireless networks. The technology is compelling for enterprises and worth keeping a close eye on, but the gains that available MIMO-based products can provide arent enough to offset the current lack of an interoperable standard or concern over MIMOs interaction with legacy networks for corporate deployments. In […]
Power over Ethernet is often best delivered en masse, with high-port-density switches or power injectors delivering power and the network to numerous devices simultaneously. But sometimes, at small remote locations (or my house), Ive needed to power just a single device, which is why Linksys 12-volt WAPPOE12 POE Adapter Kit is so handy. While Linksys […]
Companies looking for the most affordable way to kick off an SSL VPN technology pilot project—or deploy basic service for a small number of users—should check out the beta version of 3SP Ltd.s SSL-Explorer. Although 3SP eventually plans to offer fee-based support contracts and optional plug-ins such as certificate-based authentication, the base product—which includes access […]
With Connectra 2.0, Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. leverages its vast experience securing networks, applications and client endpoints to provide the most comprehensive security feature set weve seen in an SSL VPN product to date. However, the product could stand to be more interoperable and easier for administrators to use. Click here to read the […]
With the rapid proliferation of centralized wireless LAN solutions geared toward smaller networks (and priced accordingly), eWEEK Labs expects that more small businesses and remote offices will turn to the wireless switch platform and its “thin” access points. Despite recent contractions in the marketplace, wireless switches are an extremely attractive alternative to “thick,” or intelligent, […]
eWEEK Labs evaluation of two small-office wireless switches showed that both perform well but that each is suited to a different kind of network. We tested Symbol Technologies Inc.s WS 2000 Wireless Switch and Trapeze Networks Inc.s MXR-2 Mobility Exchange. Both products offer the highest levels of wireless security, supporting AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and […]
Symbol Technologies WS 2000 Wireless Switch is an easy-to-configure, capable wireless solution for small offices. However, it lacks many of the more intelligent RF (radio frequency) control capabilities and enterprise-grade management features that larger companies would want for branch offices. Click here to read the full review of the WS 2000 Wireless Switch. 2 Symbol […]
Trapeze Networks MXR-2 Mobility Exchange provides good features for small businesses and corporate branch offices alike, but enterprise customers will most appreciate Trapezes optional enterprise management console, the excellent RingMaster. Click here to read the full review of the MXR-2 Mobility Exchange. 2 Trapeze Networks MXR-2 Mobility Exchange provides good features for small businesses and […]
eWEEK Labs installed each product we tested on a fully patched Windows 2000 server, configured with a 2.4GHz processor and 512MB of RAM. We found that the products varied in the amount of processing power needed for day-to-day operation and reporting, so larger deployments should carefully consider how many clients each server will manage. /zimages/3/28571.gifClick […]
