In the hubbub of Interop news surrounding HP’s broadside shot at Cisco it was easy to overlook the management angle. I’ll be looking at just that area and in particular at HP’s Intelligent Management Center.
HP’s Intelligent Management Center proposes to put the network management console on a single pane of glass, a claim that network management tools have made every year since I started working at eWEEK back when it was still PCWeek in 1997. Then it was HP OpenView, CA Unicenter along with BMC and a host of vendors that have since disappeared from view such as Cabletron.
In recent briefings with Cisco around their Nexus products and developments including their next generation routing architecture called LISP (Locator-ID Separation Protocol), Cisco also expressed a desire to reduce the number of monitoring and management tools. Thus, it seems that everyone can agree that in order to run networks that provide the services and connectivity that businesses require. What remains to be seen is how it looks in the NOC.
