Sun Microsystems Inc. Tuesday announced that Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Version 1.4 will support the Web Services Interoperability (WS-I) organizations Basic Profile specification.
Ralph Galantine, Suns group manager for Java Web services, said Sun joined WS-I in October and is now showing that it can support the organizations Basic Profile, thus adding to Suns existing support for a host of Web services standards such as the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Web Services Definition Language, and Universal Description, Discovery and Integration.
J2EE 1.4 will be available this summer along with a battery of compatibility tests.
“Developers can expect compatibility, and they can expect interoperability when .Net comes to the table” with WS-I Basic Profile support, he said.
J2EE 1.4 will be dedicated to developing Web services and also will focus on integration with enhanced support for J2EE connectors, Galantine said. J2EE 1.4 features Version 1.5 of the J2EE Connector Architecture.
“Were really happy to get the Basic Profile support,” Galantine said. “That shows the flexibility of the J2EE platform.”
Suns support for the Basic Profile indicates Suns commitment to the WS-I organization, which the company was reluctant to join for the first several months of the organizations existence.
Galantine said Sun will likely ship products—its Sun ONE application server and Sun ONE Studio integrated development environment—that will include J2EE 1.4 by the end of the year. Yet Sun, like other vendors, currently supports portions of the J2EE 1.4 specification. Oracle Corp. is expected to support the specification this summer in its application server, the company said.
The WS-I Basic Profile is an outline that specifies how Web services components can be used together to compose a Web service.
Last week, the WS-I announced the availability of new documents to support the organizations Basic Profile 1.0, which is expected to be released in the second quarter of this year.
Meanwhile, the WS-I recently voted to amend the Basic Profile to include SOAP attachments in Version 1.1 of the profile, which the organization will release shortly after the release of Basic Profile 1.0, WS-I officials said.
