The Mozilla organization has gotten a lot of attention for its excellent Firefox Web browser, but the groups Thunderbird mail client has grown into an application worthy of just as much praise.
During the past few months, I have used Thunderbird for all my e-mail requirements on Windows and Linux systems. I have been impressed with the interface design and performance of the application.
With Thunderbird Version 0.8, which began shipping earlier this month, the application exhibits continued improvement on the road to its 1.0 release.
One of the first Version 0.8 changes to catch my eye was Thunderbirds improved quick-search feature, which allowed me to search for messages based on keywords in the message bodies. (Previously, this feature searched only through senders and subject lines.)
I was pleased to see that Thunderbird 0.8s RSS reader handles RSS feeds like e-mail accounts. Id hoped to use Thunderbirds message-filtering capabilities to collect articles of interest from the feeds Id set up in folders, but the filter I set up to test this didnt work.
Thunderbird 0.8 is available for free download at www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird, with versions available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.
