Mobile device maker Kyocera Wireless announced last week that it is laying off 600 employees.
Most of the job cuts, about 450, will come from Kyoceras manufacturing ranks, and the cost-cutting measure will allow the company to move manufacturing of its second-generation cell phones to a plant in Tijuana, Mexico, owned by Kyoceras sister company Kyocera Mexicana, said spokesperson Mary Palmer.
Manufacturing of Kyoceras newest phone models will remain in San Diego, Palmer said.
Kyocera will also lay off about 150 service and repair staff. All layoffs will be completed by July.
Meanwhile, Finnish phone giant Nokia announced last week it will also cut hundreds of jobs.
The exact number of layoffs has not been determined yet, but the bulk of the layoffs will come from Germany and Finland.
Nokia has more than 50,000 employees worldwide.
